Cooking conversions

Cups to grams, tablespoons to millilitres, Fahrenheit to Celsius. Weight-to-volume conversions use the ingredient's real density, because a cup of flour and a cup of honey weigh very different amounts.

Questions people ask

How many tablespoons are in a cup?

16 tablespoons in 1 US cup. 1 tablespoon is 3 teaspoons, so a cup is 48 teaspoons.

How many grams is a cup of flour?

About 120 grams of all-purpose flour when spooned into the cup and levelled (King Arthur Baking’s figure). Scooping straight from the bag packs it and can give 140 g or more, which is why bakers weigh.

How many ounces in a cup?

8 US fluid ounces in a cup (volume). Weight ounces depend on the ingredient: a cup of flour weighs about 4.25 oz, a cup of sugar about 7 oz.

Is a UK or Australian cup the same?

No. A US cup is 236.6 ml, while a metric cup (Australia, Canada, New Zealand) is 250 ml. Most US recipes, including ours, use the US cup.
